Description

This is a 30-hour pre-accredited program designed to help you gain confidence using your smart device/s through understanding their key features and how to best use them for common tasks such as sending SMS, using email and navigating the internet. We also cover broader concepts such as staying safe online.

The course is aimed at people who have a smart phone or a tablet and have some experience using their devices, but want to increase their understanding and get the most out of their digital devices. 

A smart phone is one that can connect to the internet - there are two main types - iPhones and Android phones (e.g a Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel). 

 

Please note this course is not suitable for Macbooks. 

What you can expect to learn:

  • Introduction to smart devices; smart phones, tablets
  • Overview of your smartphone – key features, buttons, icons
  • Using SMS
  • Using your smart phone to take and share photos
  • Navigating the Internet
  • Using email
  • Using social media
  • Using apps and software
  • Software updates
  • Popular everyday technology e.g., Google Maps, watching Netflix
  • Staying safe online

Note: The course content can be adapted based on the group’s interests and objectives.

The group size will be a minimum of 6 participants. Each module provides opportunities for you to participate in individual, small group or whole class activities, helping you to build confidence and develop your skills.

Fees

Fully funded - $50 enrolment fee
Concession card holders - $20 enrolment fee
Fee-paying  - $320 

Government-subsidised fee

If you are a permanent Resident and/or Australian Citizen/New Zealand Citizen and not enrolled in mainstream secondary school you are eligible for a government subsidised fee. 

Concession fee
This fee is available to:

  • Commonwealth Health Care Card holders, and their dependant children and dependant spouses
  • Pensioner Concession Card holders, and their dependant children and dependant spouses
  • Veteran's Gold Card holders (but not their dependants).
  • Please note: if under 17 years of age and disengaged from school, participants will need to obtain an official Transition from School Form for us to sight.
    There are no pre-requisites for this course.
    People with a disability are encouraged to apply.

About the tutor

Siobhan is a skilled and adaptable digital trainer who has worked with the Be Connected program teaching +50 year olds digital skills for the last 5 years. She is well versed in helping people navigate their smart phones, tablets and laptops, using plain English and engaging exercises tailored to participants of all skill levels. Siobhan loves helping participants learn the skills required to become confident with their devices and sharing knowledge in a relaxed and enjoyable way. 

Siobhan has worked in the digital industry for over 15 years, developing websites, mobile apps and delivering training courses to front-line teams in Melbourne and London. Her professional work means that she understands technology at a level which makes her a natural trouble-shooter and understands the intricacies of misbehaving devices!  

Siobhan appreciates that participants are most invested when learning topics that assist them day to day and takes the time to understand participants learning objectives and adapting course material to that effect.
