Nillumbik Youth and Living & Learning Nillumbik are partnering to bring you Daily Grind, a 10-session program to help young people aged 16-24 upskill and find employment in the hospitality industry.

Description

This program will cover the basics of hospitality including:

  • Customer service and point of sale
  • Safety at work
  • Using a coffee machine and barista training
  • How to wait table and serve dishes

Each participant will also undertake a placement at a local cafe, putting their knowledge to the test in a practical hospitality setting. 

Course dates, hours and location

The Daily Grind course is made up of five sessions of learning at Eltham Training site, followed by up to 4 sessions of placement in a local cafe.

Dates for Training: Mon 4th, Tues 5th, Fri 8th, Mon 11th, Tues 12th December 2023 

Dates for placement: TBC

Time: 10am-3pm

Location: Eltham Living & Learning Training site, 905-907 Main Rd, Eltham 3095 (opposite the Burger Lounge, next to Eltham Kindergarten) and Eltham Living & Learning Centre, 739 Main Rd, Eltham.

Barista and hospitality training:

Participants are provided with 5 sessions of hospitality and barista training with a registered hospitality and barista trainer. Training content includes: learning how use an industry coffee machine, knowledge about how coffee is made from bean to cup, different types of coffee, cleaning and safety measures, food handling procedures and more.

Training sessions will run from 10am-3pm at the Eltham Training Site 907 Main Road, Eltham on the following days:

 

Café placement:

Participants will be matched with a local café or restaurant for 3x 4 hour placement shifts.  The days and times of the shifts will be different for each participant and will be based on your availability. Shifts will either be a morning (8am-11am), afternoon (11am-2pm) or late afternoon (2pm-5pm).

During placement, participants will work directly with a supervisor and will be able to ask them questions and take direction from them on tasks to complete during their placement shift. A Nillumbik Youth staff member will also check in on participants during their placement to ensure all participants are feeling good about the progression of their placement.

Job readiness session and celebration:

Following the end of placement, participants will come together for a final wrap up session. Participants will complete a job readiness workshop, receiving assistance with their resume, cover letter and interview skills from a Nillumbik Youth Development Officer. Following the job readiness workshop participants will get a celebration lunch and receive a certificate of completion along with a list of local hospitality businesses currently hiring.  

Fees

Funded: $75 enrolment fee

Concession: $30 for concession card holders.

Fee-paying: $270 - if you are under 17 and/or not eligible for a funded spot

Government-subsidised fee
If you are a permanent Resident and/or Australian Citizen/New Zealand Citizen and not enrolled in mainstream secondary school you are eligible for a government subsidised fee, please note you will need to provide a copy of your Medicare card for a government funded enrolment. 

Concession fee
This fee is available to:

  • Commonwealth Health Care Card holders, and their dependant children and dependant spouses
  • Pensioner Concession Card holders, and their dependant children and dependant spouses
  • Veteran's Gold Card holders (but not their dependants).
  • Please note: if under 17 years of age and disengaged from school, participants will need to obtain an official Transition from School Form for us to sight.

If you are eligible, you will also need to present your concession card at one of our centres prior to the start of the course in order to be eligible for a concession fee. 

For non-eligible individuals, the full fee will apply.
