Digital photography introduction

This class is ideal for new DSLR or mirrorless camera owners, as well as those who are returning to photography.  Open to people aged 18 years and over.

In each session you will be able to practice what you learn using your own camera with lighting, backdrops and subject matter all provided.

The course runs for 8 sessions and covers:

  • automatic and manual settings - which is best for you?
  • different focus settings and areas
  • using aperture controls to change our photographs.
  • the best settings for great portraits
  • the best settings for great landscapes
  • setting your camera for fast or slow speeds.
  • when to use slow speeds and when to use fast ones.
  • understanding exposure, flash, and low light photography
  • the fast, easy ways to fix exposure problems. 
  • using your camera in very low light. (When using your pop-up, flash is an advantage.)
  • freezing water using your pop-up flash.
  • taking photographs at night, including soar and moon photography
  • macro and close-up photography
  • using your camera for panoramas
  • black and white photography.

What to bring/ what to wear

  • Your digital camera (any make, fully charged)
  • a note book

Please note

We do our best to avoid changes to scheduled courses. However, we recommend buying materials/equipment no more than one week prior to the start of the course to avoid expense in the case of cancellation.

This activity is held at Eltham Living & Learning Hub and is open to people 18 years and over.

Activities start from 28 April. (Please note this is one week later than the Victorian school term.)
