Course description

Aged care is one of the fastest-growing industries in Australia due to being an ageing population.

This course is designed for workers in the community and /or residential setting who provide individualised support to people who need support due to ageing, disability and other reasons.

The course has been designed in consultation with industry and includes both theory and hands-on learning.

You will learn to communicate and work in health or community services, provide individualised support, recognise healthy body systems, work with diverse people, support independence and wellbeing, follow safe work practices, work legally and ethically.

Work placement/industry experience

120 hours of work placement is required in this course, organised by Living & Learning Nillumbik.

You will complete placement over 4 - 8 weeks, depending on availability. A current police check, Influenza and COVID vaccination is required.

We work closely with the Aged Care and Home and Community Care industries to ensure maximum practical hands-on experience during the course. 

Our placement model offers maximum support for our learners with a balance of theoretical learning and the practical application of your knowledge in industry. Assessors will also visit you in the workplace providing further training and assessment.

Practical Placement can also be an effective pathway into employment – over 95% of our students are offered employment before completing the course.

Training days: Thursdays - face to face delivery with additional self-paced study hours

Government-subsidised fee
If you are a Permanent Resident and/or Australian Citizen/New Zealand Citizen and not enrolled in mainstream secondary school you are eligible for a government subsidised fee. 

Concession fee
This fee is available to:

  • Commonwealth Health Care Card holders, and their dependant children and dependant spouses
  • Pensioner Concession Card holders, and their dependant children and dependant spouses
  • Veteran's Gold Card holders (but not their dependants).
  • Please note: if under 17 years of age and disengaged from school, participants will need to obtain an official Transition from School Form for us to sight.

If you are eligible, please select the concession fee when enrolling and click "calculate discount".  You will also need to present your concession card at one of our centres prior to the start of the course in order to be eligible for a concession fee.  

For non-eligible individuals, the full fee will apply.

Prerequisites

You must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • have a current Police Check at the time of placement 
  • current Influenza vaccination at the time of placement
  • have achieved the required scores in a Language, Literacy and Numeracy review
  • complete a Pre Training Review 

As per Victorian Government guidelines, all staff working in the Aged and Community Care sector will need to have their first COVID vaccination by 18/10/2021 and to be fully vaccinated by 29/11/2021 (unless a medical exemption applies) - this will be required by students in order to undertake mandatory work placement.

The National Police Check (with no disclosable outcomes) is to be able to participate in work placement and to apply for future employment opportunities. You should be physically fit, enjoy helping others, have patience, understanding, energy, adaptability and a willingness to take responsibility. You'll also need a good level of digital literacy.
